CLUB HISTORY

Romiley Marina Swimming Club was formed on the 7th July 1973 – when the pool was opened by former GB swimmer Diana Wilkinson.

The club has achieved many successes over the years including being the swimming club where 3 times Olympian James Goddard's swimming career began.  James is still involved in the club in his role as assistant head coach. RMSC has had many swimmers representing the club at National level, over our 45 year history.

Last year (2017) has been the most successful year in the clubs history under the guidance of our current  head coach Neil Ryan.  Previous head coaches over the years include;

  • George Smith
  • John Buller
  • Liz MacDonald
  • John Vass
  • Steve Cordingly
  • Steve Volp

RMSC has links to Islay swimming club, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with former Coach John Buller assisting in getting the club up and running, back in 1981, some of our swimmers have been over to Islay and swam with our Scottish counter parts .  John and Ruth Williams ran Friday nights and Wednesday lifesaving for several years.

The club has a dedicated team of volunteers, involved in the teaching, coaching, welfare, and the committee – the club is truly grateful for all their help, incorporating all the latest modern technology and giving their time up for the members.  Some of our volunteers have been with the club since it was formed and families who have swam through to the next generation with parents returning to the club several years later with their children.

Our swimmers range from 5 to 67 years old and are involved across all sections of the club from from Learn to Swim to Masters, many who regularly take part in open water events, triathalons and masters competitions.

RMSC is family friendly club, with a great atmosphere.
